In this episode of ‘Every Step of the Way,’ host Georgia Boothe and guest host Sarah Jonas, vice president of the Youth Division at Children's Aid, engage in an inspiring conversation with Julissa Contreras, an alumna of Children's Aid. Julissa shares her inspiring journey from a student in the South Bronx to an award-winning playwright and advocate for community justice. She reflects on the essential role the organization played in her life, empowering her through after-school programs like community justice and youth leadership. Through these programs, she found her voice, passion, and a pathway to a successful career. Julissa also details her current work with nonprofits and offers valuable advice for both the new generation and staff at Children's Aid.

Georgia Boothe
Executive Vice President: Executive Vice President Georgia Boothe joined Children’s Aid in 2015 as the vice president of the Child Welfare and Family Services Division. She oversees the organization’s work with young people who have become involved in the juvenile justice system as well as the preventive services program, which works to strengthen families that are involved in the child welfare system. She also leads a deeply experienced team of social workers and other front line staff in serving children and families with special needs. Georgia comes to Children’s Aid after spending more than five years at Pathways to Housing NY, as the executive director. She holds an M.S.W. from Columbia University and earned her undergraduate degree from Skidmore College, where she studied social work and American studies.

Sarah Jonas
As Vice President of the Youth Division at Children's Aid, Sarah provides the vision, direction and leadership for all youth programs and strategies across Children’s Aid’s community schools and centers, driving educational, social emotional, family and health outcomes for thousands of New York City children, youth and families. Prior to rejoining Children’s Aid in 2022, Sarah led the NYC Department of Education's Office of Community Schools, where she developed the largest community schools initiative in the United States, serving 190,000 students across 421 schools. She chaired the Brookings Institution Task Force on Next Generation Community Schools, which produced the February 2021 report Addressing Education Inequality with a Next Generation of Community Schools: A Blueprint for Mayors, States and the Federal Government. Sarah has served as an adviser to the Obama White House and the U.S. Department of Education on the national My Brother's Keeper Every Student, Every Day Campaign, a Federal initiative dedicated to eliminating chronic absenteeism across 30 school districts. She is an Annie E. Casey Children and Families Fellow and a certified teacher. Sarah received her bachelor’s degree from Yale University and her Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Vice President of Marketing and Communication: Anthony Ramos manages the public profile of Children's Aid across all media and led the organization’s efforts in its first rebranding process in more than four decades. Since joining Children’s Aid in 2011, Ramos has helped to communicate Children's Aid’s strategic objectives to key stakeholders and enhance its web presence through multimedia. Ramos came to Children’s Aid from the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), where he served as director of communications. Prior to his work with GLSEN, Ramos managed communications for the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center and the National Hemophilia Foundation.

Julissa Contreras
Julissa Contreras had her off-Broadway debut with her play Vámonos at INTAR theatre this past spring 2023. As a writer, performer, podcaster, educator, and advocate, Julissa focuses on storytelling as a framework for the expansion of our collective consciousness and the preservation of our histories. Julissa leans into her perspective of the world as a Dominicana from the Bronx as well as those of the surrounding communities that have socialized her experience. In addition to her artistic endeavors Julissa has dedicated 15+ years to working within nonprofits and start up organizations with a focus on community strategy, ethical engagement, DEIB practices, impact programming, media strategy, and more.
